For the past eight years, STiR Education, of which I am a co-founder, has been putting in place the conditions to help millions of teachers, officials and children across India and Africa rediscover their intrinsic motivation. We started STiR to help address the UN Sustainable Development Goal of giving every child a quality education; it is a challenge that the pandemic has made more urgent, with 1.6bn children out of school in April 2020. STiR’s programme has four simple elements: Supportive relationships, autonomy, mastery and purpose. The results are transformative.
