OUR LEARNING

We’ve learned and unlearned much along our journey to creating true system change.

SCALE AND IMPACT

STIR

We started in 2012 with 25 teachers in Delhi. Since then, we have reached more than 200,000 teachers and six million children across India and Uganda.

STIR

Independent evidence shows significant positive effects of our approach on motivation and effort in teachers and officials, and a strong contribution to student engagement and learning.

STIR

Our average annual cost per child globally is less than $1 USD. Every $1 invested yields governments $7 in improved efficiencies.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION AT STIR

Measuring intrinsic motivation is hard. Stakeholders’ behaviours are more likely to demonstrate true change than their stated preferences. So we observe practical behavioural measures over time. These relate to how officials and teachers focus on building a culture of continuous improvement. At child level, we look at the changes in how they seek, process and reflect on information.

We want our government partners to adopt our monitoring processes over time. So they need to be simple, affordable and highly scalable. Our team uses a mobile app to collect data against these measures on their regular field visits. This small sample helps us to understand our progress and identify district and country trends.

To achieve success, we need to be able to show all partners the extent of our progress. So we build a shared understanding with officials, partner organisations and our funders about what change we expect to see when. We also aim to embed our measures into government monitoring frameworks. This helps to increase their visibility, supporting sustainability and government ownership.

We conduct frequent research studies based on our learning priorities. Independent longitudinal impact studies in India and Uganda validate and deepen our learning. And we collaborate with partners to share evidence and understand any amplification effects.

EVIDENCE AND INSIGHTS

We believe in sharing our learning to strengthen the sector.
