I am Maryscovia Nowembazi, working as a District Education Leader in the Bushenyi district of Uganda. I have had the privilege of being part of STiR, a leading organisation that empowers teachers to achieve their goals through open communication, trust and mutual respect. My experience with STiR has enabled me to develop skills in fostering collaboration, building strong relationships and empowering team members to achieve their full potential. I have learned that effective leadership is about creating an environment where team members feel valued and heard. By facilitating this environment, I have been able to create a cohesive and productive team that works together toward a common goal.
My work has presented me with the opportunity to be a better leader and manager within my school. I have been empowered with the skills to lead effective network meetings, this has specifically facilitated my teachers to work together, especially during group work activities. Network meetings have stimulated a level of safe space for the teachers. They openly share experiences and give feedback which helps me fill existing gaps in the schools.
I have learned many valuable lessons from STiR’s teacher changemaker programme, particularly the importance of intrinsic motivation in the process of successful teaching and learning. My school had two teachers on staff who thought that they were inadequate, but the introduction of a growth mindset gave them the confidence they needed and they are now ranked at the top.
STiR has also helped me on a personal level, as my interaction with both students and the staff has improved. There is more open communication enhanced by the nature of network meetings. The school now has a very positive environment.
Attending national boot camps opened my horizons as I interacted with other DELs. Learning about gender has also enabled me to challenge stereotypes about females and their ability to lead effectively. I have also learnt to recognise and value all team members and I am committed to leveraging the diverse strengths and perspectives of each team member irrespective of gender. I firmly believe that teachers who feel empowered and valued will not only achieve their goals but also exceed them.
I am excited to embark on another year of learning and growth, and I am eager to continue making meaningful contributions to my school and district. I believe that being part of something larger than myself is essential to my work, and I am proud to be part of a movement that aims to create a world where teachers love teaching and learners love learning.
As a team leader, I understand that achieving these ambitious goals requires effort at multiple levels. This is why I am committed to making a difference within my school, one step at a time. By fostering a positive and inclusive environment, we can make significant progress towards achieving our shared vision of making a positive impact in the Ugandan education system.
I am grateful for STiR as their contribution has provided our country with a lasting impact.
