Mr. Ronald Mukibi began as a normal classroom teacher within the rural district of Kayunga. With his fingers covered in chalk and with a heart that burned with dedication, he served years shaping the minds of youngsters, going beyond the call to help learners academically but also otherwise. Despite the setbacks of limited materials and large student populations in each class, Ronald held on tight, he was committed to teaching albeit he saw it as a very solo pursuit and one which he achieved in isolation to others
Ronald’s career took a new direction when he was introduced to STiR Education through a series of teacher training sessions that were rolled out in Kayunga. He attended for the first time out of curiosity, but soon he sensed that something special—something inherently transformative was being imparted with the STiR approach.
The STiR training altered my perspective about myself as a teacher,” he recalls. “It wasn’t classroom techniques. It was mind, leadership, and community. I began to see myself as an agent of change.” The emphasis on the growth mindset struck a chord with him in particular. He began applying these principles in his classroom, encouraging students to embrace challenges, learn from errors, and believe in themselves. His teaching became more reflective, inclusive, and intrinsically motivated qualities that did not go unnoticed by his peers and superiors. Guided by the new vision of leadership that he had gained, Ronald shifted to become a mentor to other teachers who adopted STiR practices. His school then became the hub of peer-to-peer teaching and collaborative school improvement, and he was invited to support other teachers. His enthusiasm for shaping other individuals and for creating impacts through compassionality earned him recognition outside his institution. His leadership continued to grow, founded on the fundamentals that he had learned through STiR training—purpose, attitude, and learning.
Mr. Mukibi today is a Senior Education Officer in Kayunga District. From overseeing school improvement plans to guiding school leaders and teachers, he remains grounded on the same pillars that sparked his transformation some years back.
“Always, I say to people,” he smiles, “that my journey from classroom teacher to Senior Education Officer started on the day that I chose to believe in myself and STiR enabled me to discover that belief.” Nowadays, Mr. Mukibi is committed to mentoring up-and-coming teachers, enhancing support systems for teachers, and ensuring that every one of the schools under his mandate is headed by someone able to bring about change from within.
His is a testament to what can occur when opportunity and passion intersect, and when teachers are provided with the right resources to grow not only as professionals, but as individuals as well.
