Game-Based Learning Brings Lessons Alive in Indonesia

Game-Based Learning (GBL) is one of  the STiR Education’s dynamic approaches to transforming classrooms. By using play to teach, students not only grasp complex concepts more easily but also develop collaboration, critical thinking, and a genuine love for learning. It’s about moving beyond rote instruction and creating spaces where curiosity thrives and lessons truly come alive.

Recently, in Lumajang, Indonesia, educators got the chance to experience the power of GBL for themselves. During a lively training session, facilitators—teachers and headteachers—stepped into the role of their own students, immersing themselves in game-based activities designed to showcase the approach in action.

What followed was transformative. The room echoed with laughter, teamwork, and a palpable sense of excitement. Simple games revealed how even abstract topics could become engaging, approachable, and fun. For many, it was a revelation: learning didn’t have to feel like hard work—it could be playful, interactive, and deeply effective.

These hands-on moments created powerful “aha” experiences, giving educators practical tools they could take back to their own classrooms. More importantly, it shifted perspectives: teaching wasn’t just about delivering content anymore—it was about sparking joy and curiosity in students, helping them see learning as an adventure.

By the end of the session, there was a renewed sense of purpose. These facilitators, supported by STiR Education, pledged to champion Game-Based Learning within their Teacher Network Meetings, helping their peers embed this approach in everyday practice. The ripple effect was clear: classrooms across Lumajang are now poised to become more dynamic, playful, and student-centred than ever before.

Game-Based Learning isn’t just a technique—it’s a mindset shift. And in Lumajang, it’s already inspiring educators to reimagine what’s possible in their teaching, one joyful lesson at a time.
