“Being aware of intrinsic motivation is a stepping stone to creating a safe and fun learning environment in school”, Pak Huda, SDN Blabak 2, Kediri City
Pak Huda is the principal of SDN Blabak 2 Subdistrict in Kediri City, Indonesia. He recognises how difficult it is to create a pleasant environment in school which keeps both the children and teachers happy. According to him, every child who goes to school deserves to be joyful. However, various circumstances and family backgrounds can pose challenges in creating such an environment.
The implementation of the STiR programme (in partnership with YBPU) helped him understand the importance of intrinsic motivation in teachers and other stakeholders involved in the education system. The strategies that he learned in our sessions have inspired him to create plans that can benefit children and teachers both. He initiated school morning greetings, where words of encouragement are spoken to lift the mood of the students. He has also started numeracy playgrounds where children can play and learn with their peers before initiating school activities. These small changes were welcomed by the teachers and have brought a lot of joy in the classrooms, students spent their day with a positive attitude.
Pak Huda says, “This type of activity is an entry point for children to feel confident because it accommodates appropriate stages of their learning development, which makes them intrinsically motivated to learn and improve.”
He receives support from his School Supervisor, Ibu Nur and school teacher, Ibu Nita. They say that Pak Huda continues the programme initiatives in order to instil a growth mindset in all the school members. However, this should not be limited to school. He believes that collaboration is required in the entire education system and the child’s surrounding community. The implementation of parent-teacher conferences has helped parents understand their children’s needs back at home. He expects the result for children to grow up on the same educational foundation at school, at home and in society as a whole.
Even though this is a challenging approach, regular meetings between parents and teachers continuously encourage parents to create a learning environment at home. Pak Huda is inspired by STiR’s programme which instills intrinsic motivation in the education system at all levels.
We are proud of the efforts that Pak Huda is making and look forward to him creating a lasting impact in his school.
