Learning from 8.93%: Small Steps, Big Impact

At the heart of every thriving education system are the people who guide and support teachers; the school supervisors. The School Supervisors Institute is designed to do just that: provide a space for supervisors to learn, reflect, and exchange ideas on effective teaching practices. The ultimate goal is to empower them so they can, in turn, support principals and teachers, creating a ripple effect that benefits students across the school.

Recently, during a School Supervisors Institute session in Garut, Indonesia we measured the impact of our programme through pre- and post-tests. The results showed an 8.93% increase in supervisors’ knowledge. At first glance, this figure might seem modest. But in the context of professional growth, it carries a much deeper significance. Every increment in understanding equips supervisors to share new insights with the principals and teachers they work with, amplifying the impact far beyond the initial learning session.

Learning is rarely about dramatic leaps; it’s about steady, incremental progress. The Garut session exemplifies this perfectly. Supervisors demonstrated that learning is a continuous journey, modeled by consistent practice, reflection, and refinement. This is precisely the example that teachers and school leaders need, an illustration that growth is a process, not just a destination.

Moreover, this experience reminds us that meaningful change often begins with small steps. An 8.93% increase may not grab headlines, but it shows that progress doesn’t have to be spectacular to be important. With a willingness to learn, the support of peers, and a commitment to passing knowledge forward, even small improvements can strengthen the entire education ecosystem.

In education, as in life, every step matters. By valuing incremental learning, we create a culture where continuous improvement becomes the norm, and where every supervisor, teacher, and student can thrive.
