The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on education has been significant all around the world. In India, all educational activities came to a halt and millions of learners stopped going to schools and colleges. But the pandemic has given STiR Education an opportunity to experiment with new practices and approaches, and strengthen our capacity for using technology as a mode of delivery.
Our key learning in Tamil Nadu is summarised below:
- A needs analysis completed by teachers received around 2,300 responses, which mostly focused on continuity of learning, social and emotional wellbeing and the safety of students during the pandemic.
- A shift to a blended form of delivery (using synchronous and asynchronous models of remote learning), supported by the provision of a senior district official to act as ‘District Champion’, enabled us to double our reach in the state over this period.
- Virtual delivery can enable greater sharing of learning between districts, as officials are able to attend sessions in multiple districts and we also saw greater participation from state-level representatives.
STiR would like to thank the Tamil Nadu state government and the Samagra Shiksha for their immense support over recent months. We’re hoping that continued success will enable us to agree further expansion, and we look forward to continuing to work together as we move towards the reopening of schools, so that we can support every child in Tamil Nadu to develop the foundations of lifelong learning.
