STiR’s response to Covid-19 in Uganda

The Covid-19 crisis has presented unprecedented challenges to the education system in Uganda, with schools now closed for more than five months. STiR Education has developed an approach to leverage its expertise, capacity and networks to support the Ministry of Education and Sports to address its emergency priorities. In this case study, we explore how this approach is contributing to efforts to maintain education during this period, and ensuring that the system is prepared to meet the complex needs of learners when they return to school.

Our key learning is summarised below:

  • Ensure content is primarily driven by core values and principles, then consider how this can best be delivered through the available platforms – not the other way around.
  • When planning remote learning for students, think how you can best unleash everyone in the system to maximise its effectiveness.
  • Actively identify and reflect upon the challenges of remote delivery in offline contexts, and use these reflections to iterate and improve.
