Context
Indonesia is the world’s fourth largest education system. Since 2020, increased government education spending has resulted in more children enrolling in school and staying longer. Teacher numbers have also increased. But many lack the required skills and knowledge to be effective educators. As a result, learning outcomes are poor. More than 50% of students are not on track to gain the basic skills required to get a job.
Our Work
STiR Education started operating in Indonesia in 2022. We partnered with Bakti Barito Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Barito Pacific, an integrated energy company, to run our programme. Our first projects were in two districts of East Java. We help the district leadership to revitalise their existing structure of teacher meetings.
Since 2023, we have established a national Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (MoECRT)—now known as the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (MoPSE). Lasting for three years, this agreement gives us a national profile and creates greater leverage for our scale efforts.
As part of this partnership, we committed to expanding our operations into two additional provinces: East Nusa Tenggara and West Java. We are now working across six districts in total throughout Indonesia, supporting the continued growth of our programme.
“Such grassroots movement efforts are truly necessary to be conducted so that a transformation in education that empowers society as a whole may flourish sustainably to make behaviour changes.”
– Anang Kurniawan, head of Kediri Education Office, Indonesia
